30GM-IO Series Ultrasonic Sensors: Pushbutton Programming

The 30GM-IO Series is the newest addition to the Pepperl+Fuchs ultrasonic sensor family.  One main feature of this series is the pushbutton programming that allows quick and easy on-site parameterization without requiring software.  The 30GM-IO pushbuttons can be used to configure trip points, output function, output behavior, and even the shape of the sound cone.  In this article, we will look at how to program the sensor using these pushbuttons.

The sensor is equipped with two outputs that can either be two switch points or one switch point and one analog.  Each output is assigned to one of the pushbuttons, T1 or T2.  For the analog output version, T1 is the switching output and T2 is the analog output. These outputs will also have their own yellow LED, L1 and L2, which are visible from both sides of the sensor.

Programming ultrasonic sensorsThe first step of programming is setting the near and far trip points for the individual outputs:

To set the near point

  1. Position your target at the required near trip point.
  2. Press and hold the pushbutton for 2 seconds until the yellow LED flashes.
  3. Briefly press the pushbutton to save the near trip point. The green LED will flash 3 times as confirmation.

To set the far point

  1. Position your target at the required far trip point.
  2. Press and hold the pushbutton for 2 seconds until the yellow LED flashes.
  3. Press and hold the pushbutton again for 2 seconds to save the far trip point.  The green LED will flash 3 times as confirmation. It then returns to normal mode.

Once you have the trip points taught into the sensor, the next step would be programming the operation mode.  Operation mode is a 3-stage process that allows you to set the following parameters:

  • Output function.
  • Output behavior of the switching output/analog output.
  • Shape of the sound cone.

Output function

Operating mode can be programmed separately for each of the outputs, T1 and T2.  To enter programming mode, press and hold the pushbutton of the output you would like to configure for 5 seconds.  The green LED will now be flashing and the number of flashes indicates which function is currently programmed.  The output functions are represented as:

Output functions for ultrasonic sensorsBy briefly pressing the pushbutton, you can navigate through the output configurations until you see the correct number of flashes.  Save your selection to the sensor by holding the pushbutton for 2 seconds.

Output behavior

When you have successfully saved the output function, you will see that the yellow LED is now flashing.  The number of flashes represents which output behavior is currently programmed.  The output behavior is indicated by the following:

Once again, you can navigate through the options by briefly pressing the pushbutton.  To save the selection, press and hold the pushbutton for 2 seconds.

Sound cone shape

Now you will see the red LED flashing to indicate the sound cone shape that is currently programmed.  There are three different options for the sound cone, and they are represented as:

  • 1x: Narrow
  • 2x: Medium
  • 3x: Wide

Briefly press the pushbutton to navigate through the different sound cone shapes.  Save the selection by pressing and holding the pushbutton for 2 seconds.  The sensor will now return to normal mode.

There are a couple of important notes to keep in mind when programming this sensor using the pushbuttons:

  • The sensor can be programmed only during the first 5 minutes after power up.  If you are in programming mode, this time is extended.  If no programming activities take place within 5 minutes, you would have to cycle the power in order to program the sensor.
  • If you are in the process of programming the sensor and wish to quit without changing any of the settings, you can press and hold the pushbutton for 10 seconds.
  • This sensor can also be reset back to factory settings using the following procedure:
    --Disconnect the power supply.
    --Press and hold one of the pushbuttons.
    --Connect the power supply (you will see an LED indication).
    --Release the pushbutton.

In addition to the pushbutton programming, the 30GM-IO series is also configurable through IO-Link and PactWare software.
